Diabetic Retinopathy patients develop vascular changes in the retina after approximately 20 years, but early indications of the disease can be determined by testing the patients Oscillatory Potentials, an effective and simple to perform ERG test.

The OP test shows smaller wavelets on the ascending rise of the ERG. Oscillatory amplitude is a highly sensitive predictor of progression of diabetic retinopathy, and provides a predictive way to track the disease in patients predisposed to effects of the disease in addition to fluorescein angiography.
